Nations with established nuclear programs are significantly increasing their capacity:
- France: Aggressively restarting idled reactors and has announced plans for at least six new EPR-2 reactors to ensure energy independence.
- United Kingdom: Moving forward with Sizewell C and investing heavily in Small Modular Reactor (SMR) development to replace aging coal and nuclear plants.
- Poland: Is actively constructing its first nuclear power plant to decouple its grid from coal and ensure long-term stability.
- Czechia & Hungary: Expanding existing sites with new, state-of-the-art reactor units to meet future demand.
Planning & Researching
Countries are investing in the next generation of technology:
- China & India: Leading the world in the construction of new reactors, with a heavy focus on Sodium Fast Reactors (SFR) to achieve fuel circularity.
- USA: Providing massive federal support for advanced reactor demonstrations, including metal-fueled sodium designs similar to ReCore-Reactor.
Evaluating Options
Societies that have previously exited or phased out nuclear are now in the midst of a rigorous public and political debate:
- Global Context: Following various nuclear exits, a post-exit debate is emerging as the reality of baseload requirements and energy costs becomes apparent.
- Belgium: While shutdowns are scheduled for 2025–2026, the government is actively evaluating alternatives and life-extensions for existing units.
- South Korea: A major policy reversal is under discussion, with plans to restart construction on paused units and expand domestic nuclear exports.
